The Staff Speaks

The LAVENDER STARSHIP: A Year Later.

It's been almost one year since we published the first LAVENDER STARSHIP. This year has shown us that our collective struggle for liberation is a long and tedious task. Many of our lesbian sisters have now devoted all their energies into the growing woman's movement, separating from gay groups because of sexism. Some lesbians, on the other hand, have chosen to work within joint groups. This situation is found even in our paper, which was put together principally by men.

Organizations continue to grow through consciousness-raising sessions, dances, meeting and hard work.

Relationships between Third World Gays and gay organizations are slow to develop as many Third World sisters and brothers feel the racism of gay groups.

House Bill 511, the criminal code revision, has come and passed, and will go into effect January, 1974. It's not perfect: straight bureaucrats have seen fit to make sodomy legal and soliciting for love illegal. The crumbs thrown to us are not liberation but reform from a non-understanding straight world.

Gay people are still being arrested, still being put in institutions, still being raped, still being pumped with the hate-filled philosophies of Jesus freaks and the so-called spirit of "love."

This paper has been put together to help us to learn to express our feelings of love towards all Gays. It is not an end unto itself; it is just one expression of Gay Love.

If anything, I think we learned that liberation is a long road, which takes patience/nurt/joy/struggle to travel. It is not an easy road, but

it is Joyous one.

Come and share our/your joy in this paper and in Gay Pride Week. and be proud,
