nents of the amendment argued that gay people pay taxes just like everyone else "and that to discriminate against any class of citizens is contrary to the spirit of a bill designed to provide legal services for those Americans who cannot afford them," the bill passed the House. (It was defeated originally on a voice vote but won on a recorded. vote--a fact indicating that our Representatives are voting on this issue not from conviction but rather from fear of the New Right.)
